Gary C. Kirk, 74, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2022, at his home near Mifflintown.
Born June 5, 1948 in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Clair and Helen (Whitebread) Kirk.
He is survived by one daughter, Tammy Swartz, and husband, Nate, of Port Royal, three grandchildren, Jensen Swartz and fiancé, Kyle Hart, Marley Swartz, and Brock Swartz, two sisters, Norma Leach and Audrey Hunker, both of Mifflintown, one brother, Bruce Kirk and wife, Roma, of Port Royal, and he was dearly loved by his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Kirk, two sisters, Betty Love and Marlene Rowles, and a stillborn sister, Lana Kay Kirk.
Gary graduated from Juniata Joint High School.
He was a veteran of the 1st Infantry Division in the United States Army from June 19, 1968 to Jan. 21 ,1970. He served in Vietnam and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Air Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
He was a retired self-employed painter.
He was a member of the Mifflintown American Legion and VFW, the Lewistown Moose, and the Cross Keys Hunting Club.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, attending local carnivals and fairs, hanging out at Casner’s Garage, spending Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway and watching his grandson race. He was always helping his neighbors. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and taking them out to eat for special occasions.
His memorial service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 23 at Guss Funeral Home, Inc., 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with Rev. Samuel Leister officiating. Interment will follow in East Waterford Cemetery where the Juniata County Veterans Council will accord full military honors.
Although there will be no viewing, the family will receive friends Friday from 5 pm to 7 pm at the funeral home.
