Madeline L. “Midge” Rowell, 96, who lived near Mifflin since 2000, formerly of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, where she had lived for 57 years, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2019, at Riddle Hospital, Media.
Born Oct. 29, 1923, in Mifflintown, she was a daughter of the late R. Samuel and Anna (Sauers) Stetler.
Her husband, Raymond J. Rowell, whom she married on Aug. 26, 1950, died on June 26, 1978. She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Katherine Valunas, Faylene M. Kerlin, Grace S. Houtz, and Marjorie S. McKee and two brothers, George S. Stetler and Richard A. Stetler.
She was the last of her immediate family and is survived by nieces, nephews and their families.
As a young woman, she worked at the William Banks Hotel in Mifflintown. She moved to Michigan in 1943 and worked as a switchboard operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad, the American Lady Corset Co., and Detroit Power Screwdriver.
She graduated from Juniata Joint High School in 1941. She regularly attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Nook.
Midge enjoyed traveling and playing cards, especially Pinochle and Hand and Foot. She was a member of multiple card clubs.
She volunteered with Juniata Co. Meals on Wheels the fourth Tuesday of every month, helped wrap caramels for the Westminster Presbyterian Church caramel project, and knotted quilts with the ladies from St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church.
Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at Guss Funeral Home, Inc., 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with Rev. Richard A. Adams officiating. Interment will be in St. Stephen’s Lutheran in Cemetery, Licking Creek Valley.
There will be a viewing from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Monday at the funeral home.
