Harmon J. “Hump” Bender, Sr., 74, of Bender Lane, Mifflin, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at Hershey Medical Center.
Born June 14, 1947, in Van Wert, he was a son of the late Raymond S. and Mary E. (Speece) Bender. His wife of 27 years, Deborah E. (Symmerman) Bender, died January 15, 2015.
He is survived by three sons, Harmon J. Bender Jr. and significant other, Abby Kreitzer, of Richfield, Brian K. Bender and wife, Sue, of Mifflintown, and Michael B. Bender and wife, Brandy, of Mifflin, three sisters, Kaylene Swartz of Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin, Maude and husband, Robert Speece, Sr., of Thompsontown, and Anna Mae Haubert of Thompsontown, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren with another one on the way.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Charlie, Clayton, Sam, Boyd and Billy Bender, and one sister, Carol Bender.
Hump was a metal worker for 46 years, retiring from Dayton Parts, Harrisburg in 2014.
He was a faithful member of Rock Full Gospel Church where he was very active with the church and Sunday school.
He loved his family, and especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren. He was always helping others, whether it was driving them places or sharing his homemade whoopie pies and peanut butter eggs. He enjoyed hunting, throwing horseshoes, tinkering on cars and tractors, and feeding the birds. He especially enjoyed the cardinals. In his early years, he enjoyed bowling.
His memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 2, at Rock Church, with Pastor Jerry Conley officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing.
