Evelyn Benner Obituary

     Evelyn G. Benner, 97, of Mifflintown, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025 at Brookline Manor.

     Born April 3, 1927 near Thompsontown, she was a daughter of the late Oscar Whitely and Vera (Kepler) Graybill. Her husband, Samuel Benner Jr., whom she married Oct. 6, 1946, died on May 17, 2009. Also preceding her in death was an infant brother, Jimmy Graybill.

     She is survived by three children, Frederick S. Benner and wife, Kim, of Mifflintown, Sally B. Pry and husband, Rodney of Mifflintown, and Michael S. Benner and wife, Amy, of Everett, one brother, Richard D. Graybill of McAlisterville, eight grandchildren, James D. Benner, Eleanor G. Bemer, Emily B. Nice, Ryan L. Pry, Shena M. Fodor, Samantha R. Stein, Aaron M. Benner, and Christopher E. Benner, twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

     Evelyn graduated from Thompsontown High School and from Thompson Institute in Harrisburg. She worked as a medical secretary until graduating from the Mifflin Juniata Vo-Tech School in 1976 as a licensed practical nurse. She worked as an LPN for more than 20 years at Lewistown Hospital, then as a visiting hospice nurse and her last employment was at Brookline Manor.

     She was a very active life-time member of Free Spring Church of the Brethren where she was especially involved with their music program. She also sang in the Juniata County Choir for many years. She was a member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and she volunteered with Hospice and with Juniata Meals On Wheels. She was a proud farm wife, helping her husband on their family farm and cooking and canning their homegrown vegetables. She also enjoyed sewing and making quilt tops and was a 4-H sewing club leader for many years. She was dedicated to her family, especially to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

     There will be a viewing beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Free Spring Church of the Brethren with her funeral service Saturday at 11 a.m. at the church with Rev. Terry Smith officiating. Interment will be in Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery.
