Donald Martin Whitesel, 87, of Mifflintown, entered into rest on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.
Born July 23, 1936, in Licking Creek Valley, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Martin Roosevelt and Carrie Melissa (Zimmerman) Whitesel. His wife of 60 years, Harriet Eleanor (Fuge) Whitesel, whom he married March 21, 1959, passed away on Oct. 6, 2019. Also preceding him in death were one sister, Vivian Young and one brother, Victor M. Whitesel.
He is survived by four children, David E. Whitesel of Dallastown, Joel M. Whitesel and wife, Katherine M., of Columbus, OH, Jonelle D. Page and husband, James A., of Thompsontown, and Holly W. Sayre and husband, Lawrence G., of Camp Hill; two sisters, Joyce Steward and Maxine Varner, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He graduated from Juniata Joint High School and attended Lock Haven State Teacher’s College. He was a dairy farmer and retired from the PA Turnpike in 1999. He was also a Fermanagh Township Supervisor.
He was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church and the Mifflintown Lion’s Club.
Don enjoyed bowling, hunting, reading the newspaper, putting puzzles together, playing cards, using his computer, and was an avid Penn State sports fan. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
His Celebration of Life will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 3, at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Licking Creek Valley, with the Rev. Richard Adams officiating. There will be a visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church. Interment in Adams Cemetery, Mifflintown, will be at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 8489 Licking Creek Road, Mifflintown, PA 17059
