Betty P. Thompson, 89, of East Waterford, passed away into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 15, 2024, surrounded by her family at home following a brief illness.
She was born on June 26, 1934 in Honey Grove to the late Guy and Esther (Randolph) Peck. She married Jack R. Thompson on May 26, 1951.
Betty was a stay-at-home mother who, throughout her life, was very active in her community alongside her husband. She enjoyed volunteering for years in the East Waterford Fire Company while her husband was the fire chief and later in life volunteering at Lack-Tuscarora EMS. She also enjoyed attending auctions every week which sparked her idea to open her own flea market, Betty’s Garage Sale, where she sold furniture, appliances and other housewares. The flea market allowed her to meet many people who would enjoy stopping to shop and catch up on the “old days” of East Waterford.
She was a member of Faith in Christ Church of East Waterford, formerly known as East Waterford Methodist Church, where she and Jack attended for many years and a member of the Lack-Tuscarora EMS.
The most important thing in life to Betty was her family and she gave all her love, loyalty and dedication to each one of them. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was affectionately known as “Ma” to, not only her family, but many in the community. Everyone was always welcome at Ma’s house.
She is survived by her daughter, Jacqueline T. Leister and husband, Michael, two granddaughters, Jessica R. Lee and Jennifer (Jason) Piper, four great-grandchildren, Josie and Julia Rice and Olivia and Connor Piper, all of East Waterford and a sister, Gladys Ehrenzeller of Harrisburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack R. Thompson, daughter, Jill L. Thompson, an infant daughter, and a grandson-in-law, Stanley Lee.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 beginning at 10:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at Lack-Tuscarora EMS, 9320 Rt 75 S, East Waterford with Pastor Judy Rowles officiating. Interment will be in East Waterford Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Betty’s memory can be made to Lack-Tuscarora EMS, 9320 Rt 75 S., East Waterford, PA 17021.
Guss Funeral Home, Inc., Mifflintown, is assisting the family.
