Alice H. Swartz, 91, of Mifflintown, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Brookline Manor.
Born May 20, 1932, in Mifflin, she was the daughter of the late J. Fred and Lillian (Zook) Houtz.
Her husband, C. Dale “Pete” Swartz, whom she married Oct. 18, 1952, died January 8, 2022. She was also preceded in death by her brother Robert Houtz.
She is survived by daughters Carol Wolff and husband Thomas of Souderton, PA, and Nancy Saner and husband David of Thompsontown; grandchildren Jonathan Wolff and fiancée Meredith Marsh of Pittsburgh, Jason Wolff of Souderton, Allison Hower and husband Michael of Mifflintown, and Kristen Graybill and husband Timothy of Mifflintown; and great-grandson Tucker Graybill.
Alice graduated from Juniata Joint High School in 1950. She then worked as a telephone operator at the Mifflintown exchange until dial service began. Later she was employed in the Juniata County School District’s tax office.
Alice was a selfless wife, mother, grandmother, and daughter. She packed Dale’s lunches at 5 a.m.; led Girl Scouts through cookie sales, day camps, trips, and service projects; participated in band boosters; attended her grandchildren’s school and sporting events; and looked after her mother and mother-in-law for many years.
Alice loved polka and square dancing, playing the piano, quilting, and baking Christmas cookies. For many years, Alice and Dale enjoyed taking cruises and traveling to many US states and several European countries.
As a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Alice participated in the Needlers group where she made hundreds of quilt tops for Lutheran World Relief.
Guss Funeral Home, Inc., Mifflintown, is assisting the family with a private service. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery.
