Elsie E. “Sis” Hackenberger, 89, of Locust Run, went to be with the Lord on Wed., March 6, 2024 at Brookline Manor, Mifflintown.
Born Dec. 30, 1934, she was a daughter of the late John K. and Hazel (VanHorn) Kerchner. Her husband, Carl. A. “Pete” Hackenberger, whom she married June 21, 1952, passed away on Sept. 28, 2001.
She is survived by three children, Curtis Hackenberger and wife, Ada, of Port Royal, Scott D. Hackenberger and wife, Junie, of Thompsontown, and Tonda M. Brubaker and husband, Doug, of Mifflintown, eleven grandchildren, Andy Hackenberger (Jenna), Heather Welsbacher (Anthony), Phil Varner (Laura), Cory Hackenberger (Sara), Mary Stoltzfus (Jared), Amy Hackenberger, Ben Hackenberger, Eric Brubaker (Rachel), Angie Reinford (Drew), Michael Brubaker (Sarah), and Cody Brubaker (Morgan), and 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Danielle Hackenberger and Carrie Hackenberger, and two sisters, Marie Bahn and Tina Regester.
Sis worked as the head cook at Walker Elementary School for 33 years. She was an Avon representative and was also known for baking and decorating cakes for decades. She was an Election Inspector at the Walker Township Voting Polls. In the 60s, she made and sold sandwiches and baked goods to the workers at PrecisionWare.
She attended Cedar Grove BIC Church, and in recent years, Cornerstone Community Church and Thompsontown First Baptist Church.
She encouraged her husband and children by attending their sporting events including softball, hockey, and football games, and canoe races and was a cub scout den mother. She enjoyed reading. She loved to travel and visited all 50 states. She worked with ceramics and crafted beautiful nativity sets. She also made and collected Santa Clauses. She watched NASCAR races and was a Jeff Gordon fan. In later years, she enjoyed sitting outside watching vehicles go by her house. But her greatest joy was her family, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, at Cedar Grove Brethren In Christ Church, 287 Deerville Road, Mifflintown, with the Rev. Ken Hepner officiating. Interment will follow in Locust Run Cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 9:30 until the time of the funeral on Wednesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a memorial contribution to the Carrie and Danielle Hackenberger Fund, Westminster Presbyterian Church, 208 Lemon St., Mifflintown, PA 17059.
