Joyce A. Schlegel, 78, of Mifflintown (Mexico), passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin, after a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 7, 1940, in Lewistown.

She is survived by one son, Gerald E. "Jerry" Schlegel, Jr. and wife, Sabrina, of Mifflintown; two granddaughters, Alyssa Schlegel and fiancé, Jared Heikes, and Kylie Schlegel, and one sister, Patricia Bell and husband, Tom.

Her husband of 53 years, Gerald E. "Gerd" Schlegel, whom she married on Sept. 5, 1962, passed away on May 15, 2016.

Also preceding her in death were her father, Michael H. Renninger, Sr., her mother, Virginia (Cummings) Renninger Schlegel, her step-father, Albert Schlegel, and two brothers, Michael H. Renninger, Jr. and William Renninger.

Joyce worked at Locust Grove Retirement Village as an aide and also in the laundry. After she retired, she was a private caregiver who became close to the people she cared for.

She enjoyed crocheting scrubbies, reading, doing word searches, and spending time with her family and friends. She especially loved her son and granddaughters.

It was her wish to be cremated. Her graveside memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2019, at Union Cemetery with Rev. Dan Rockwell, officiating.

Jerry, I am so sorry for your loss. Though not recently, we had a lot of good times and will miss Sis very much. I especially remember the family visits to Dover, camping at Mexico, and more recently playing cards. Sis made the best scalloped potatoes and meatloaf I ever had! Our love to you.
