     Rev. M. Eugene Heidler, 82, formerly of Mifflintown, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at his home near Millerstown.

     Born Sept 30, 1936, in Altoona, he was a son of the late Max and Estella (Miller) Heidler. He was raised by his grandparents, Rev. Herman and Clara Miller.

     He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Gwendolyn J. "Dee" (Smith) Heidler, whom he married May 21, 1955, one son, Gene Heidler and wife, Sondra, of Millerstown, one sister, Laurie Richardson and husband, Boyd, of San Diego, Ca., five granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

     He was preceded in death by a half-brother, David Heidler.

     He started his ministry in Kentucky and then moved to Johnstown. He was the pastor of Cedar Grove BIC Church for 24 years and of Millersville BIC Church for 14 years. He retired from full-time ministry in 2001and was the interim pastor at Good News Lutheran Brethren Church, at Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, and then at Saville BIC Church where he subsequently served as the pastor for five years, retiring again in 2010. He was a member of many Brethren In Christ Church committees at large and was very involved in Roxbury Camp in many capacities. He also worked as a U.S. mail carrier and a truck driver, among other jobs throughout his life.

     He devoted his life to ministering and caring for others. His family was also very important to him and he loved spending time with them.

     His funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, at Cedar Grove Brethren In Christ Church, 287 Deerville Road, Mifflintown, with Rev. Ken Hepner, officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

     There will be a viewing at Cedar Grove Church on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of the services at the church.

     Guss Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Third Street, Mifflintown, has care of the arrangements.

I'm sad to hear of Rev. Heidler's passing. When I was still in school, he drove our school bus for a while...he was a wonderful, thoughtful man who I enjoyed being around.
