Luella Houtz McLaughlin, 76, of Port Royal went to be with her Lord on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born Nov. 5, 1940, in Mifflintown, she was a daughter of the late Doran K. and Grace (Stetler) Houtz.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James R. "Jim" McLaughlin, whom she married Aug. 12, 1961; two sons, Steven J. "Steve" McLaughlin and wife, Christine, of Mifflintown and John P. McLaughlin and wife, Rhonda, of Mifflin, four grandchildren, Katie, Neil, Grace, and Jim, one sister, Nancy Wenger and husband, Ben, of Quarryville, and one brother, Keith Houtz and wife, Anne, of Dillsburg.

Luella graduated from Juniata Joint High School and took several courses at the Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a teller and bookkeeper at the Juniata Valley Bank in Mifflintown until 1966 when she became a full-time homemaker to raise her children and care for her family.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Nook, where she was financial recording secretary and served on altar guild. She was a former member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Mifflintown where she had been active in the church, with the Sunday school, and with the youth group for many years.

She enjoyed babysitting, quilting, canning, braiding rugs, cooking, and reading, especially cookbooks and horticultural books.  She had a talent for gardening and had a green thumb growing her plants and flowers. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and grandchildren, supporting them, and doing for others.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Port Royal Lutheran Church, 402 Market St., Port Royal, with Rev. Charles Hershberger officiating. Interment will be in St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, Licking Creek Valley.

There will be a viewing on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Guss Funeral Home, Inc., 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown. There will not be a viewing at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who desire make memorial contributions to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, PO Box 337, Mifflin, PA 17058.

When I think of St. Paul's, I can't seem to remember a time that Luella wasn't sitting in the pew behind us, nor can I remember a time when she wasn't smiling, whether I was turned around in my seat when I wasn't supposed to, or at the Boy Scout's Ham and Bean Soup dinners, or any of the chance meetings around town when people you know pop up in your life for a brief moment when you are mailing a letter or buying a gallon of milk.
I loved that she cared when she asked how I was, or what was going on in my life, in the quick minutes after service, even as a young child; and I can still hear her laugh, see how her shoulders bounced when she really got into it, though I've since forgotten what it was that was so funny.
But her smile, I think, is what I remember the most, and what I miss today, and I am thankful that I had the opportunity to know her in the way one does in the chance meetings around life.
I am sorry for your loss, Jim, yours and your family's. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Jim,
Ruth and I were so saddened to hear of the loss of your beautiful wife Luella. The last time we saw the two of you together was at Hoss' Restaurant, where she really seemed to be enjoying her meal and was, as usual, her usual friendly self. She was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her. Please accept our very deepest condolence at your tremendous loss. What a blessing to know that on THAT DAY, you will be with her again.

God bless you and yours,

Ken and Ruth Fisher
