     Laura Alice Horning, 89, of Licking Creek Road, Mifflintown, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 2, 2017, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.

     Born June 3, 1927, in Bunkertown, she was the youngest child of the late Charles A. and Emma (Bassler) Burns. Her husband of 60 years, Cletus M. Horning, died on Aug. 31, 2011.

     She is survived by three children, Cheryl A. Zang of New Bloomfield, Kim M. Horning and his wife, Kathy, of Elizabethtown, and Lori A. Leach and her husband, Jerry, of Thompsontown; nine grandchildren, Erica Adamire and husband, Dwight, L. James Whistler IV and wife, Nicole, Laura Whistler and boyfriend, Adam Truitt, Lori Bell and husband, Tom, Tobi Dowling and husband, Greg, Nicole Hegeman and husband, Jared, Alex Horning and wife, Kerrin, Dustin Horning and Gavin Horning; three step-grandchildren, Brandon Leach and wife, Rachel, Jordan Leach, and Kelsey Leach; 11 great-grandchildren, Shelbi Dowling, Alli Dowling, Kyli Dowling, Emma Bell, Hanna Bell, Leah Bell, Lily Adamire, Cooper Adamire, Landon Whistler, Lyman Whistler, and Silas Truitt; and three step-great-grandchildren, Rockwell Leach, Solomon Leach, and Alayna Truitt.

     She was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers, Audrey Mae Fogleman, Henry Fogleman, LeRoy Fogleman, Martha Detra, Annabel Sassaman, and Betty Page.

     She graduated from Fayette High School in McAlisterville in 1946 and worked at the McAlisterville Shirt Factory. After her marriage, she was a full-time homemaker.

      She was a member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church and Bunkertown Church of the Brethren.

     Laura was a true gardener and had a green thumb with her flowers and vegetables. She had some rose care tips featured in "Birds & Bloom" magazine. She enjoyed writing poetry for a time and had some poems published in the local newspaper, Juniata Sentinel. As an avid reader, she read many books and her Bible. She also enjoyed watching birds. She had a beautiful soprano voice and loved to sing. She was a member of St. Stephen's Church Choir and the Cantata Choir for many years and often sang in trios and quartets. As a young woman, she sang with her sisters at various churches. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at St. Stephen's for many years.  She was an excellent cook and processed lots of vegetables by canning and freezing them. She enjoyed taking walks and spending time with family and loved picnics, birthday parties, and holidays. Most of all, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

     Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Chris Mathiason officiating.  Interment will be in St. Stephen’s Lutheran Cemetery, Licking Creek Valley.

     There will be a viewing from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Monday at the church.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 8489 Licking Creek Road, Mifflintown, PA 17059.
